In 1883 British humorist and author Phillip Stewart Robinson published Sinners and Saints, A Tour Across the States and Round Them, with Three Months Among the Mormons in which he tweaked the beard of Mormon residents of Logan, UT.
“The Gentile does not take very kindly to Logan. There are no salons, there are no public animosities to give what they call ‘Spirit’; …Everybody that meets ‘Brothers’ and ‘Sisters’ each other in the streets.”
In the same year Sinners and Saints was published the first punishment for profanity in Logan was issued to a man who pleaded guilty and was fined $5 (about $130 in today’s money). Must have been an excellent expletive to command such a high price.
Planning Commissions are where today’s community values meet the real world.
On March 11, 2021 the Logan Planning Commission met and among the first items on the agendum was PC 21-010,The Brickyard Zone Change. The well-written minutes note the commission generally favors Mixed Use (MU) neighborhoods as they “…allow taller buildings and a density bonus for residential units. The minutes also note: “As stated in the General Plan, a compact infill near Logan’s core will reduce pressure to sprawl outwards into surrounding rural areas. Infill is more efficient on utilities and infrastructure. Infill is less taxing on Logan City’s transportation system and should result in fewer miles driven and lower amounts of pollution emitted by residents.”
Planning Commission Chairperson Regina Dickinson was the only vote against MU for The Brickyard neighborhood.
