SALT LAKE CITY – This fall, business leaders from across the Wasatch Front held in-person meetings with three members of Utah’s federal delegation to discuss employer-provided healthcare benefits. Congressional representatives spoke in favor of a competitive marketplace as opposed to a single-payer system, and voiced their commitment to support policy that makes it easier for employers to supply generous benefits to their workforce.
“When workers feel good, feel productive, and feel healthy, our society grows, and our businesses grow,” said Representative Burgess Owens. Praising business leaders for their involvement, he continued, “This is the fastest growing state and it’s because we have business owners that really take this time to figure out how this particular sector works.”
Representative John Curtis called for the expansion of HSAs as they allow individual tailoring of health plans and personal investment in healthcare. He highlighted the need for better mental health care and encouraged mindfulness of the effects of social isolation, especially among youth.
“Offering affordable employable health benefits is key to recruiting and retaining top talent,” said Representative Blake Moore. “I am working with my colleagues on solutions to challenges in the healthcare space, including employee health benefits.”
Business leaders shared best practices and spotlighted their current focuses in employee well-being. They expressed appreciation for the delegation’s willingness to develop policy that helps state businesses attract and retain talent, and continue to compete in the global market.
