When you want to try a restaurant, you often have to plan ahead – make a reservation, map out how to get there, decide who is going to join you. It’s an event. Don’t get me wrong – I love restaurants. Food trucks, however, can show up where you least expect them, crossing your path in a serendipitous way, offering the opportunity for spur-of the-moment culinary satisfaction.
That’s what happened to me with Silver Moon Taqueria. They’re a truck that’s usually in the Salt Lake area. Imagine my surprise to cross paths with them in Mapleton when they catered a wedding reception (congratulations Kenny and Brighton!)
Silver Moon Taqueria’s menu is simple. They offer tacos, salads, burritos, and quesadillas. It’s a pattern that’s familiar – choose your meat or other filling, then decide in what form you want to consume it. Often, when catering events, food trucks will offer a somewhat pared down version of their menu. When I enjoyed Silver Moon Taqueria, they offered tacos filled with steak, chicken, or summer squash and zucchini. The tacos were topped with onion and cilantro and accompanied by lime wedges and chips and salsa – available in mild, medium, and hot.
First, let me tell you these tacos were incredible. All too often, street tacos are small and easily handheld. While those have their place, I was pleased to see that these tacos were enormous. The double layer of 6-inch corn tortillas was absolutely needed to contain the meaty goodness within. I had a steak taco and a chicken taco and, get this – after two tacos, I was stuffed! Normally I’d go back and place another order, but it was absolutely not needed this time. Both tacos were delicious. I’m a steak guy so that won out, but they were both flavorful and I’d order either in the future again. I was also impressed with the quality of the meat. No questionable, gristly, or otherwise nasty bits here. All three salsas added great flavor. I wouldn’t categorize any of them as truly hot, but they contributed a flavorful kick and that’s more than half the battle.
Know Before You Go: Silver Moon Taqueria is usually located in the Salt Lake area. According to their website silvermoontaco.com, they are also opening an eatery which will expand their offerings to include burgers, chicken wings, etc. It’s always satisfying to see a food truck find enough success to branch out or open brick and mortar locations (I’m rooting for Red Tacos, which I reviewed a couple months ago. They’re opening a brick and mortar location near University Mall in Orem.) Silver Moon’s online menu prices tacos at $3.50 – $4.50 each and chips, guac, or queso ranges from $3 – $6.
