On a recent stormy day, I went out in search of comfort food. Truth be told, I’d intended to try a BBQ
truck, but the universe has a funny way of upending even the best laid plans. Upon arriving at the BBQ
truck, I discovered I wasn’t the only one who thought hot BBQ would be good on a chilly day, and they
were out of many of their meats and other items. Not wanting a sub-par experience, I decided to wait
on giving them a try. However, parked right next to them was another food truck I’ve heard about for a
while: The Lost Bread.

The Lost Bread is hard to quantify. Their name is a literal translation of the French pain perdu, so named
because of French toast’s history as a peasant food when stale, old bread was revived through a soak in
custard and baked to golden brown deliciousness. If French toast was all they sold, I’d consider The Lost
Bread a breakfast truck. Yet, they also have grilled cheese, which fits better as a lunch truck. Bread
pudding and French toast sticks weigh in favor of a dessert truck. Maybe I was overthinking this and the
“bread” in their name gave me the direction I sought – they were a bread truck. But the addition of soup
on the menu strayed from the strict confines of a bread truck or even a baked goods truck. Ultimately,
as I stood in the frigid, biting wind and rain, I realized what they really are is a comfort food truck. Every
single item on their menu seemed the warm hug needed on such a cold, blustery day.

The menus could definitely use an upgrade – I have no idea how they became so worn and dingy.
Despite that, I wanted to try everything on them, but I also realized that I am just one man and that
would be excessive. I ultimately decided to take a sweet and savory approach, going for grilled cheese,
soup, and bread pudding. It seemed perfect on a gloomy day.
The Lost Bread has many variations of grilled cheese to choose from. For basic grilled cheese, you can
choose from cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, or pepper jack. You can also go with a loaded grilled cheese by
adding ham, turkey, or roast beef. And there’s even an additional level with their deluxe grilled cheese
line which adds ingredients such as pesto, garlic aioli, bacon, ranch, etc. While all of these sounded
delicious, I think the real test of a grilled cheese is if it can be executed well in its simplicity, so I went
with Swiss and nothing else. And nothing goes better with grilled cheese than tomato soup, so I got that
as well. This is the only soup they were offering, but that’s okay because it was the only soup I would
want with a grilled cheese.

Digging into the food, the grilled cheese and soup were impressive. I can be a cheese snob and this
sandwich was clearly filled with processed Swiss cheese that would be an embarrassment on a cheese
platter or charcuterie board, but it was absolutely perfect for the sandwich. You couldn’t ask for cheese
to be meltier, smoother, or have a more satisfying cheese pull. The bread was grilled and crispy on the
outside and held up well to dipping in the tomato soup. The soup was hot and flavorful, the saltiness
perfectly accenting the sandwich. 10/10.

Whether you get French toast or bread pudding, your customization options are the same. So it’s really
a question of what form you want to consume your custard-soaked, baked bread in. I chose the
Strawberry Sunshine, which comes with strawberries, whipped cream, and orange butter sauce. The
bread pudding was good, but not executed with the same level of precision as the grilled cheese and
soup. The flavors were great – the custard and the orange butter sauce worked well, and the whipped

cream and strawberries were good additions. The flaw to their bread pudding is that it was composed
mostly of the crusty edges of what I assume is leftover French toast, and very little of the softer inside of
the bread. This resulted in too many pieces that didn’t absorb enough of the custard, and a few inner
pieces in a pool of sauce at the bottom that were overly soggy. Achieving the right consistency of moist
but not soggy is a careful balancing act that distinguishes good bread pudding from the rest of the pack.
While their flavors were great, I think The Lost Bread could improve on this aspect. 6/10.
I was impressed that the soup, sandwich, and bread pudding were all ready at about the same time and
were all hot. A small gripe is that their order and delivery window seems much too high. I’m a tall guy
and I’m not used to reaching above my head to grab what I need. They also charged slightly different
prices than what was listed on the menu, which is more evidence in favor of much-needed menu
updates.
Know Before You Go: Overall, I liked The Lost Bread and would definitely try them again. Next time, I’ll
probably choose the French toast instead of the bread pudding. They’ve been around since 2016, so
they are well established, and they won a best food truck in Utah recognition from The Food Network in 2019.My sandwich, soup, and bread pudding came out to $18.23.
