PRESENT ISSUES FACING THE FUTURE

“A few miles east of Wendover, UT, down a dirt road, lies one of the most unlikely nightspots you will NEVER see. It’s not open anymore but in its day it was a hot spot. Or more accurately: a cool spot. It is a cave at the northern base of Wendover Peak and was a makeshift officer’s club where those officers among the 20,000 personnel stationed at Wendover Air Base during WWII could dance safely and keep lights from bleeding to the outside as required by wartime restrictions.” Those words were penned by Brandon Griggs, in “Utah Curiosities.”

In its day the place was called “JukeBox Cave.” Today the cave and officer’s club are shuttered to keep vandals from looting the site.

To the west, the small city of Wendover, UT is preparing for midterm elections and two sitting city council members have filed to run for mayor: Manny Carrillo and Dennis Sweat. UPU called them both about issues they think will face the citizens in the near future. Dennis Sweat told us “The two top issues facing our community are lack of a healthcare facility.  It is a long trip to Salt Lake City for health emergency services.  And we need to  build the tax base.  We need more jobs and more people to move in to fill those jobs.” Manny Carrillo has not yet responded to our request.
