During the late stages of World War II almost 20,000 personnel were stationed at Wendover Air Base just south of Wendover, UT. Then the base was a training ground for bomber squadrons that flew daylight bombing raids over Germany. As well, for a short time it was home to Enola Gay the plane that dropped the atom bomb over Hiroshima, Japan.
The air base is still there with orders-of-magnitude fewer people and is now under the jurisdiction of Tooele County, and was recently the topic of discussion by Mayor Mike Crawford with the Wendover City Council when the Mayor “…informed the council that he had met with Tooele County Commissioner Tom Tripp …regarding the million dollar grant for the airport for upgrading the water and sewer line to the airport.” The mayor further noted that the “…proposed county fire district would not change anything the department is already doing except add a tax to our residents and ‘We do not believe it will provide any benefit to the city.’ ”
Wendover City is the only place in Utah on Pacific Time Zone.
Differences in expectations and schedules are not limited to those between federal and state governments, even cities and counties are often not in sync.
